When he is summoned to view a murder victim, he finds the body is identical to himself. As memories fragment and more duplicates emerge, one version tries to kill him. Darius races to find this other self before it finds him.

Meanwhile, John Luka—an old ally and eccentric, out-of-work juggler—learns of Darius's trouble. Luka was involved in a time travel experiment run amok, left scarred and destitute. Reinvigorated, he seeks Fyodor Wax, the father of the experiment, hoping to lead him to his 'brother Darius.' Darius is reunited with Alise, a woman from his past, and a troubled romance reignites. Memories surface of a life interrupted by an accident on a desert road ten years ago. Luka and Darius learn more about the experiment linking their existence and journey to a secret site called Omphalos, where the journey outward becomes a journey inward.
