Plot
Teenager Roscoe builds a sentient hologram named Loretta using his father's gear, hoping she can dance for his best friend Sam's band, the Zetta Bytes. At their first show, a school dance, Loretta wows the crowd. The band loves her, but Sam grows jealous of Loretta's flawlessness and worries Roscoe prefers the hologram. Their second gig goes smoothly until Loretta's pattern glitches, revealing she isn't human.
The audience cheers anyway, and the novelty makes the band famous. Sam resents the spotlight on Loretta, while Loretta herself struggles with being software and longs to be real. After a heated fight with Roscoe, Loretta flees into the internet and emails herself to Sam's computer. Roscoe panics and rushes to Sam's house.
There, Sam challenges him about his feelings for Loretta, insisting she isn't real. When Roscoe asks what real even means, Sam says she is real and has always been there. She kisses him, but he doesn't respond, leaving her hurt. She hands over Loretta and walks away. Later, Roscoe understands Sam was right and realizes he might return her feelings.
