Production

Next Exit is the directorial debut of Mali Elfman, who wrote the script more than ten years before its premiere. She revisited and added to the script whenever she faced a difficult period or struggle in her life. Elfman wrote the lead role with her friend Katie Parker in mind and cast Rahul Kohli as the second lead after admiring his performances in iZombie and The Haunting of Bly Manor. Her friends Rose McIver and Tongayi Chirisa, both also from iZombie, along with Karen Gillan and Diva Zappa, appear in the film. The project was in development for over eight years before Helmstreet Productions decided to finance it. Filming took place during the COVID-19 pandemic from January to February 2021 in Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
