Girlicious was an American girl group put together by Robin Antin, the person behind the Pussycat Dolls, on the CW reality competition *Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious*. The group first signed with Geffen Records and included Nichole Cordova, Tiffanie Anderson, Chrystina Sayers, and Natalie Mejia. Their first album, which shared the group’s name, came out in Canada in August 2008 and climbed to number two on the Canadian Albums Chart.
The group’s story began after the first season of *Pussycat Dolls Present* aired, when Antin decided to create a new group. (The show only had one season.) Filming started in summer 2007 with 15 finalists. The episodes featured improvisation tasks, group and solo performances, and tension among the contestants. Antin originally planned for a trio but changed her mind during the finale, making it a quartet. The four winners started recording their debut album in fall 2007 while the show was still being edited for broadcast. Canadian audiences gave the group its biggest attention and success, with the debut album going platinum in Canada. The group was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for “Breakout Group” but lost to the Jonas Brothers, and the show was nominated for “Reality: Music Competition” in 2008 but lost to *American Idol*.
On June 11, 2009, Anderson posted a video on her YouTube channel confirming she had left Girlicious. She explained that Antin and the label wanted a new direction for the group, moving away from an urban sound, and mentioned personal conflicts, saying some members didn’t share the same values or morals. On June 21, 2009, the group performed at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, where they won “Most Watched Video” for “Like Me,” and their video for “Stupid Shit” came in second.
In late 2009, the remaining members began recording their second album. That December, they announced they had left Geffen Records and signed with Universal Music Canada, shifting toward a more pop sound and away from the hip-hop/R&B of their first album. Their first single from the new album, “Over You,” hit Canadian radio on December 25, 2009, and peaked at number 57 on the airplay chart and number 52 on the Canadian Hot 100.
