Danity Kane were formed on the third season of Making the Band, which aired in 2005. After a multi-city search, Sean Combs selected five finalists: Aubrey O'Day, Wanita 'D. Woods' Woodgett, Shannon Bex, Dawn Richard, and Aundrea Fimbres. The group's name was created by combining the names of two original characters from a comic book that Dawn Richard had drawn. Their debut album, Danity Kane, was released in 2006 and sold over 234,000 copies in its first week, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. The album's lead single 'Show Stopper' peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the second single 'Ride for You' was chosen by fan poll.

The group's second album, Welcome to the Dollhouse, was released in 2008 and also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 236,000 copies. The lead single 'Damaged' became their second top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. However, tension within the group escalated, and during the October 2008 finale of Making the Band 4, Sean Combs removed O'Day and Woodgett from the group. The remaining three members continued promotional events before officially disbanding in early 2009. All members were released from their Bad Boy Records contracts later that year.

The group reunited in 2013 with four of the five original members, but Fimbres left the reunion tour in 2014 to start a family. After a fight between O'Day and Richard in the recording studio on August 8, 2014, the group disbanded again, though their third studio album, DK3, was released in October 2014. Following this, Richard pursued a solo career, while O'Day and Bex formed the duo Dumblonde. In August 2018, the trio of O'Day, Bex, and Richard announced another reunion tour. O'Day and Richard released new music as a duo under Danity Kane in 2020. The group's Instagram account went inactive in March 2020, but in 2025 they announced the Untold Chapter Tour, featuring the return of O'Day, Woodgett, and Fimbres.
