Career

Scot Elkins began his motorsports career as an engineering team manager for the NASCAR team Robert Yates Racing from 2000 to 2004. He then moved to Toyota as an engineer before returning to his alma mater, Indiana State University, to teach motorsports management as an adjunct professor. In 2005, he became a technical official for the Champ Car World Series and played a role in coordinating its merger with the Indy Racing League in 2008. From 2008 to 2015, he worked as a technical executive for the American Le Mans Series and later the IMSA SportsCar Championship.

Around the time he left IMSA, he was named race director for the USF2000 Championship and the Pro Mazda Championship. Elkins joined Formula E in 2016 and became its race director starting with the 2017–18 season, a role he held until his departure after the 2025 Miami ePrix, when his deputy Marek Hanaczewski took over. He also served as race director for Extreme E and, during the 2022 season, for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, replacing Niels Wittich.

Beginning in 2018, Elkins occasionally acted as a deputy race director for Formula One, initially under Charlie Whiting and alongside Michael Masi. He was the deputy race director during the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which led to Masi’s removal by the FIA. He also assisted with race directing for FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3. For the 2026 season, IndyCar Officiating Inc. was established as a non-profit entity to provide independent officiating for the IndyCar Series, separate from IndyCar and its owner Penske Entertainment. On April 21, Elkins was announced as the organization’s Managing Director of Officiating.
