The Roanoke Colony
Where history bleeds into horror and the lost never truly disappear.
In American Horror Story: Roanoke, the sixth season, the Roanoke Colony moved after its 1580s disappearance to land in North Carolina where a farmhouse now stands. The season's events take place in and around that house.
Lore & Background
The colony was led by Thomasin White, the Butcher, who retook it by force after the colonists rebelled and then moved it to this land. The house's first owner, Edward Philippe Mott, was sacrificed by Thomasin and her men during the blood moon, and the building was later a nursing home where two sisters committed multiple murders. Shelby and Matt Miller buy it as an abandoned colonial farmhouse; the cannibalistic Polk family live nearby.
Reader's Guide
For the season the production designers built an entire colonial house in a California forest over four months. Set photographs showed a tree carved with the word "Croatoan", the one clue left by the real colony of 117 people that disappeared in 1590.
