Liquid Tension Experiment

American instrumental progressive metal supergroup formed by Mike Portnoy.

Last updated

The band was active until 1999, reunited for live shows in 2008, and regrouped again in 2020 to record a third studio album.[1] The instrumental progressive rock/metal group Liquid Tension Experiment includes John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, Mike Portnoy, and Tony Levin.[2]

Key facts and history

Portnoy first invited Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin to join, and later turned to Dream Theater bandmate John Petrucci for guitar.[3] Portnoy initially stated there would not be a third LTE album because three members were also in Dream Theater.[4] A live album titled Liquid Trio Experiment 2 was released in 2009, mostly without Jordan Rudess.[1] In 2020, the four members teased a third album on social media, and Liquid Tension Experiment 3 was formally announced for release by Inside Out Music.[5]

After Magna Carta authorized him to pursue any project, Mike Portnoy created Liquid Tension Experiment.[3] Magna Carta Records put out two studio albums by the band: Liquid Tension Experiment in 1998 and Liquid Tension Experiment 2 in 1999.[4] In 2008, the band got back together for a series of shows; six tour dates were announced on March 29, 2008.[6] Printing errors caused the album's release to be postponed to April 16, 2021.[5]

What the cited sources add

A 2017 news report confirms that Liquid Tension Experiment performed on the Cruise to the Edge alongside Portnoy's other set.[7] In May 2020, Jordan Rudess stated on Cameo that a reunion "looks very good" and that the band was organizing a time, with the pandemic making coordination difficult.[2] The same Blabbermouth article notes that Portnoy and Rudess reunited on stage in February 2019 during Cruise to the Edge to perform "Instrumedley".[2]
