Discordance Axis

Background

Discordance Axis was a grindcore band from East Brunswick, New Jersey, formed in 1991. Jon Chang started the group under the name Sedition, bringing in guitarist Rob Marton and drummer Dave Witte. They never had a bassist, and changed their name to Discordance Axis in 1992.

The band rarely gave interviews or played live, and avoided having their picture taken. Steve Procopio filled in on guitar for a few live shows and played on the 1997 Necropolitan EP. Their third and final album, The Inalienable Dreamless, came out in 2000 to strong reviews.

The band broke up in April 2001 when Marton left due to serious ear damage. Their last show was on May 13, 2001 at CBGB, with Procopio again on guitar.

After the split, Chang started Gridlink in 2004, while Witte went on to drum for Human Remains, Black Army Jacket, Burnt by the Sun, and Municipal Waste, among others. In 2019, Chang and Marton reunited in No One Knows What the Dead Think, which released one album that September on Willowtip Records. Their songs drew from inner struggles, science fiction, comic books, anime, and literature.
