Last updated
Drakkar Sauna was a musical duo from Lawrence, Kansas, active from 2003 to 2015. The group consisted of Jeff Stolz and Wallace Cochran. Their music blended elements of country, bluegrass, and folk.
History
Stolz and Cochran began working together on the soundtrack for Blood Feud, a B-movie directed by Cochran, and continued collaborating afterward. Their debut album Rover appeared in 2004, drawing on influences including Mandy Patankin and the musical Guys and Dolls. Subsequent albums included Drakkansasauna (2005), Jabraham Lincoln (2006), and War and Tornadoes (2008), a set of nine Louvin Brothers covers. The duo cited the Louvin Brothers as a major influence on their vocal styles.
In 2009 they released 20009, a space-themed album originating from Cochran's book The Moon For Its Citizens. The group disbanded in 2015 when Cochran moved to Maui, Hawaii, with a final show on August 7, 2015. They briefly reunited in 2017 to release Very Much Cologne.
Style
Critics consistently noted Drakkar Sauna's unusual style and subject matter. Paste described their songs as very idiosyncratic and complicated.
Jason Harper wrote that they perfected a merry strangeness while singing rattly, circus-wagon folk songs about bears, spears, wolf tits, and obscure historical figures. Nikki Miller-Rose called their style uniquely quirky and likened them to They Might Be Giants meets Alison Krauss. Joshua Klein of Pitchfork observed that the duo embraced American folk, bluegrass, and country traditions as outsiders, playing up Old Weird America eccentricities with a subversive wink.
