Premise
Each episode features a different cast in a scary situation involving ghosts, aliens, witches, zombies, or monsters. The storylines are darker than Stine's previous series Goosebumps, with death presented as clear and permanent, sometimes even killing the main protagonist. Some episodes have twist endings, while others offer happy endings similar to Are You Afraid of the Dark?.
Books
The 2001 story collection The Haunting Hour: Chills in the Dead of Night, illustrated by multiple artists, helped inspire the TV series, along with the 1999 book Nightmare Hour and a 2007 film. Only one tale from the collection, "My Imaginary Friend," was turned into a television episode.
