Ghostwriter (1992 TV series)
A ghost helps kids solve mysteries by reading and writing.
Ghostwriter was a children’s mystery series that aired on PBS from October 4, 1992, to February 11, 1995. Produced solely by the Children’s Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop) in association with BBC Television, it followed a multiethnic group of friends in Brooklyn who solved neighborhood crimes with the help of a ghost. This ghost could only communicate by rearranging visible text and letters into words and sentences. The show was filmed on location in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
The series aimed to teach reading, writing, and critical thinking. Each mystery unfolded over four half-hour episodes (the first story arc had five episodes), encouraging viewers to follow along and solve the case using the same reading and writing clues the team used. Supervising producer Miranda Barry pushed for the real Fort Greene setting and noted a year-long gap between the pilot and the rest of the episodes.
The main cast included Sheldon Turnipseed as Jamal Jenkins, Blaze Berdahl as Lenni Frazier, David López as Alex Fernández, Mayteana Morales as Gaby Fernández (1992–1994), Tram-Anh Tran as Tina Nguyen, Todd Alexander as Rob Baker (1992–1993), William Hernandez as Héctor Carrero (1993–1995), Lateaka Vinson as Casey Austin (1994–1995), and Marcella Lowery as Grandma CeCe Jenkins. Melissa Gonzalez appeared in a minor role as Gaby Fernández (1994–1995).
Ghostwriter earned critical praise for its realistic, ethnically diverse world. The show aired in 24 countries and inspired foreign adaptations, including a dubbed Latin American version on Discovery Kids called Fantasma Escritor. Despite its popularity, it was canceled after the third season due to declining ratings and high production costs. It reran on PBS from 1995 to 1999, then on Noggin from 1999 to 2003.
