The series revolves around five teenagers, Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias, and one alien, Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill (nicknamed 'Ax'), who obtain the ability to transform into any animal they touch. Naming themselves as 'Animorphs' (a portmanteau of 'animal morphers'), they use their ability to battle a secret alien infiltration of Earth by a parasitic clan of aliens resembling large slugs, called Yeerks, that take humans as a host by entering and merging with their brain through the ear canal. The Animorphs fight as a guerilla force against the Yeerks, led by Visser Three.

The Animorphs carefully protect their identities; the Yeerks assume that they're an Andalite strike force, the aliens that created the transformation technology, and to protect their families from Yeerk reprisals, the Animorphs keep up the façade. Over the series' run, the pretense becomes harder to maintain; the Yeerks grow more cautious and dedicate more time and resources to capturing the 'Andalite bandits'. Though the Animorphs can assume the form of any animal they touch, there are several limitations to the ability: they can only stay in animal form for two hours, or they will not being able to return to human form. Also, the process requires some level of concentration to prevent the animal's natural instincts from overpowering the human intellect.

Reader's Guide

The series was filmed in Toronto, Canada. Due to budget issues, and for logistical and safety reasons, the morphs of the characters from the books were changed and others adapted out, with Jake having the white tiger morph, Tobias' morph being a Harris' hawk rather than a red-tailed hawk, and Rachel having the lion morph rather than an elephant and grizzly bear. Also, instead of Cassie, Marco has the wolf morph, rather than a gorilla. The animals used were supplied by the Bowmanville Zoo, and Homer, the Golden Retriever who is Jake's dog, was trained by Bryan Renfro. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released twelve episodes in four VHS volumes titled The Invasion Series. Seven volumes spanning the first 20 episodes were released in Australia by Paramount Home Entertainment. As of August 2026, all 26 episodes are available on Fandango, Amazon Prime Video, and Tubi. On April 3, 2026, it was announced that Ryan Coogler's production company Proximity Media had acquired the rights to the book series to be turned into a television series for Disney+ with 20th Television.

The Premise and Its Rules

Behind the Camera: Production and Adaptation Choices

Protocol Entertainment produced the series, with Deborah A. Forte and Bill Siegler serving as executive producers, and all principal photography took place in Toronto, Canada. The on-screen animal work was sourced from the Bowmanville Zoo, while Jake's loyal Golden Retriever, Homer, was specifically trained by handler Bryan Renfro. One of the show's most notable departures from the source material was its roster of morphs. Citing budget constraints, logistical difficulties, and safety concerns, the production team swapped several of the book's creatures for more manageable alternatives. Jake's signature morph became a white tiger, Tobias shifted into a Harris's hawk rather than the red-tailed hawk of the novels, and Rachel's primary form was a lion instead of the elephant and grizzly bear she commanded on the page. In another significant change, the wolf morph was assigned to Marco rather than Cassie, and the gorilla morph that appeared in the books was removed entirely. The core cast included Shawn Ashmore as Jake, Brooke Nevin as Rachel, Boris Cabrera as Marco, Nadia Nascimento as Cassie, Christopher Ralph as Tobias, and Paulo Costanzo voicing and portraying Ax.

Broadcast History and Home Media

The series premiered on Nickelodeon in the United States on September 4, 1998, and ran through March 26, 2000, with reruns continuing into August of that year. Canadian audiences watched both seasons on YTV, while Global picked up the second season. The show also found viewers in Europe and Australia. Around 2015, the over-the-air children's network Qubo aired reruns of the program. In terms of home video, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (operating under its Columbia TriStar Home Video name at the time) released twelve episodes across four VHS volumes collectively branded The Invasion Series, with titles ranging from "The Invasion Begins" to "The Legacy Survives." Australian audiences received seven volumes covering the first twenty episodes through Paramount Home Entertainment, though only the initial disc matched its American counterpart. The series, comprising twenty-six episodes across two seasons, is now distributed by 9 Story Media Group. As of August 2026, all twenty-six episodes are available for streaming on Fandango, Amazon Prime Video, and Tubi.

A New Chapter: The 2026 Revival

Nearly three decades after the original series concluded its run, the Animorphs franchise received a major green light. On April 3, 2026, it was announced that Ryan Coogler's production banner Proximity Media had secured the rights to K. A. Applegate's book series for a new television adaptation intended for Disney+, in partnership with 20th Television. Bayan Wolcott was attached to serve as writer and executive producer, lending a fresh creative voice to the material. Sev Ohanian, Ryan Coogler, and his wife Zinzi Coogler would executive produce on behalf of Proximity Media, while Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman would oversee the project from the Scholastic side. Proximity Media's Simone Harris and Dezi Gallegos were also named to supervise production. The announcement marked a significant moment for the franchise, which had been a staple of late-1990s and early-2000s children's television, signaling that the story of five teenagers and an alien fighting a parasitic invasion still resonates with a new generation of producers and audiences.
