Premise

A documentary filmed nine Austin high school seniors in 2000, just before their graduation from the fictional Greenbelt High. These nine—the Overachiever, Beauty Queen, Nerd, Punk, Jock, Brain, Rich Kid, Rock Star, and Wallflower—shared their future hopes on camera. A decade later, they reunite to find their lives have not gone as expected. Their adult paths are shaped by major events like the September 11 attacks, the Enron scandal, and the War in Afghanistan, with the story told through present-day scenes and flashbacks.

Development and production

My Generation is based on the Swedish series God's Highway (Blomstertid). Noah Hawley wrote the pilot script, originally titled Generation Y. ABC ordered the pilot in January 2010. Keir O'Donnell and Michael Stahl-David were the first actors cast in early February, followed by Julian Morris, Daniella Alonso, Kelli Garner, Anne Son, Jaime King, Mehcad Brooks, and Sebastian Sozzi. Filming began in mid-March, with Craig Gillespie directing the pilot. ABC added the series to the 2010–11 schedule in May. After canceling the show on October 1, ABC made the remaining six unaired episodes available online in early November.

Cast and characters

Michael Stahl-David plays Steven Foster, the Overachiever, who was class valedictorian and attended Yale until his father's Enron scandal forced him to drop out and move to Hawaii to bartend. Daniella Alonso plays Brenda Serrano, the Brain, who wanted to be a scientist but became a congressional staffer after the 2000 election. Mehcad Brooks plays Rolly Marks, the Jock, who enlisted in the Army after the September 11 attacks and is deployed in Afghanistan. Kelli Garner plays Dawn Barbuso, the Punk, who married Rolly and is six months pregnant, living with Kenneth while Rolly is deployed. Julian Morris plays Anders Holt, the Rich Kid, who was in love with Brenda but married Jackie, a fact that strains his marriage.
