Plot

Star quarterback Flash Gordon and his girlfriend Dale Arden are kidnapped by scientist Hans Zarkov and forced onto an intergalactic voyage to Mongo. Captured by Ming the Merciless, Flash and Zarkov are sent into the Tunnel of Terror for a gladiatorial battle against a giant monster. Flash uses a stone like a football to fend it off, but when pinned, Princess Aura throws him a ray gun, allowing him to kill the monster. Ming reprimands her, yet she insists Flash be kept alive, later championing him to lead a rebellion against her father.

Production

Robb Pratt created Flash Gordon Classic after learning the 1930s Flash Gordon serial was a major influence on Star Wars. Unable to replicate Alex Raymond's comic artwork, he based designs on 1940s science fiction pulp magazines. The film uses hand-drawn animation with digital paint and effects, like Pratt's earlier works Superman Classic and Bizarro Classic. Its soundtrack includes Clifford Vaughan's score from the Flash Gordon serials and Heinz Roemheld's score from The Black Cat. Eric Johnson, who played Flash Gordon in the 2007 TV series, loosely reprises his role; John Newton and Jennifer appear as Ming and Princess Aura.
