Before forming Alter Bridge, Tremonti, Marshall, and Phillips were members of Creed with vocalist Scott Stapp. After Creed became inactive in 2003, Tremonti began writing new material and invited Kennedy to join as lead vocalist. The band named themselves after a bridge near Tremonti's home on Alter Road in Detroit. Their debut album One Day Remains was released in August 2004 on Wind-up Records, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and achieving gold certification. The band's relationship with Wind-up deteriorated, and they eventually bought out their contract.

Alter Bridge's second album Blackbird (2007) received positive reviews and marked a long partnership with producer Michael Baskette. The title track's guitar solo was later ranked No. 1 on Guitarist magazine's 2011 list of greatest guitar solos. The band toured extensively and released a live DVD Live from Amsterdam. In 2009, the band took a break while members participated in Creed's reunion tour and Kennedy worked with Slash.

AB III (2010) was released on Roadrunner Records and featured the successful single 'Isolation,' which topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Subsequent albums Fortress (2013), The Last Hero (2016), Walk the Sky (2019), and Pawns & Kings (2022) continued the band's output. The Last Hero became their first album since the debut to reach the top ten of the Billboard 200 and first to reach the top five of the UK Albums Chart.

From the Ashes of Creed

Alter Bridge emerged in the early 2000s from the dissolution of one of rock's most divisive bands. After Creed went inactive in 2003 following a controversial tour, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips—three of the four members who had carried Creed through its late-'90s and early-2000s hits—began crafting new material. Marshall had actually departed Creed back in 2000, before the release of Weathered, but the three reconnected around a shared desire to move forward. They had long admired the work of Myles Kennedy's previous group, The Mayfield Four, and invited him to step in as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. The band took its name from a literal bridge near Tremonti's home on Alter Road in Detroit. Formally introduced to the public in January 2004, Alter Bridge was still a few months ahead of Creed's official breakup in June. The members were united by a simple conviction: their old band had exhausted its purpose, and their future lay with this new singer and this new identity.

A Steadily Expanding Catalog

From their 2004 debut through their eighth studio album in January 2026, Alter Bridge has built a discography that mirrors a band steadily finding its footing and then outgrowing expectations. One Day Remains, released in August 2004 on Wind-up Records, debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and earned a gold certification by November, moving roughly 750,000 copies globally despite mixed critical reception. The 2007 follow-up, Blackbird, marked a turning point both creatively and commercially, introducing a long-running collaboration with producer Michael Baskette and earning a silver certification in the UK. Beyond the Stage: Soundtracks, Games, and Wrestling

Alter Bridge's music found an unexpected second life in the world of professional wrestling and pop-culture media. In 2004, the track "Metalingus" was adopted as the entrance theme for WWE Hall of Famer Edge, a connection that persisted well beyond the original run—Edge continued using the song under his AEW ring name Cope, and in 2022 briefly switched to "The Other Side," which later became the theme for the Judgment Day faction until 2024. The band even shared a backstage segment with Edge on an episode of WWE Raw in 2005. Their crossover reach extended into gaming and film: an edited version of "Open Your Eyes" appeared in Madden NFL 2005, "Save Me" scored the 2005 Marvel film Elektra, and "Shed My Skin" landed on the soundtrack for Fantastic Four that same year. They also contributed a rare instrumental, "Ahavo Rabo Taco Salad," to Total Guitar magazine in 2005, and pressed a four-track Fan EP as a promotional release in Europe.

Fighting for Independence

The early years of Alter Bridge were shadowed by a contentious relationship with their first label, Wind-up Records. After the release of One Day Remains, band members grew increasingly frustrated as they heard rumors that the label intended to skip singles and skip the promotional push they had been promised. The group repeatedly requested a release from their contract, only to be turned down. It was not until sometime before 2006 that both sides reached terms they could live with, and all recording, publishing, and merchandising agreements were formally terminated. In a later LoudWire interview, Tremonti bluntly described the experience as "being screwed over," revealing that the band had to buy out their own contract for an undisclosed sum they were still paying off at the time. Beyond the label dispute, the members endured a steady stream of criticism: accusations that they were merely "Creed with a different singer," pressure to reform Creed, and a flood of false reunion rumors. Even after Creed did briefly regroup in early 2009, Tremonti was unequivocal: "Creed will never exist as a band again."
