History
AqME came together in late 1999 following the split of Neurosyndrom, a group that helped found the Team Nowhere music collective. The band’s name draws from the Ancient Greek word "akmê," which refers to a climax or turning point. The original lineup featured ETN (Étienne) on drums, Ben (Benjamin) on guitar, Sofy (Sophie) on bass, and Koma (Thomas) on vocals. Six months after forming, the quartet released a five-track demo called University of Nowhere. Around the time the band began appearing on various compilations, Sofy left and was replaced by Charlotte. In April 2001, they reissued 2000 copies of University of Nowhere.
Unsatisfied with their earlier work, the band spent a year in a recording studio crafting their debut album. They traveled to Sweden to work with producer Daniel Bergstrand, known for his work with Meshuggah, In Flames, and Misery Loves Co. Returning to France, AqME performed concerts alongside other French acts like Unfold and Mass Hysteria. Their new songs drew larger crowds, and the band’s audience expanded.
Critical recognition came with the release of their first album, Sombre Efforts, which translates to "Dark Efforts." Between September 2002 and October 2003, they embarked on a substantial tour across France, achieving a notable success at the Eurockéennes de Belfort. At the end of 2003, the Parisian band went back to the studio to produce their second album, Polaroïds & Pornographie ("Polaroids & Pornography"). By April 2004, Sombre Efforts had sold over 25,000 copies. On 12 September 2004, the band publicly announced they were leaving Team Nowhere.
After an extended tour, the band began recording their third album without Daniel Bergstrand. They chose Steve Prestage as producer and stayed in Paris for the sessions. The album, La Fin des Temps ("The End of Time"), came out in October 2005 and included the radio-played track "Pas assez loin." This third record featured more prominent guitar parts while remaining suitable for live performance. Its lyrics touched on topics like euthanasia in "Ainsi soit-il," the fear of death in "La Belle Inconnue," the world’s downfall in "La Fin des Temps," and human relationships. The band also recorded a track with Indochine, "Aujourd'hui je pleure," which appeared on Indochine’s album Alice & June. As a result, AqME served as the opening act for Indochine’s concerts.
