History

GAIS was founded on 11 March 1894 at Edlunds Café in central Gothenburg for patriotic purposes and to promote all kinds of sports. Its main activities were athletics and strength sports. The football department formed in 1897 and played its first official game against local rivals Örgryte IS in 1903. GAIS first appeared in the highest league, Svenska Serien, in 1915/16, finishing fourth.

The club won its first national championship in 1919 by beating Djurgårdens IF away in the finals, and repeated the feat in 1922 against Hammarby IF. GAIS won the inaugural Allsvenskan season in 1924/25, two points ahead of IFK Göteborg, and again in 1926/27. The league champions were not recognised as national champions until 1930/31, which GAIS also won. The club unexpectedly won its fourth national championship in 1953/54 by one point over Helsingborgs IF, clinching with a scoreless draw at Stadsparksvallen in Jönköping.

The following year GAIS was relegated. The club returned in 1955/56 but never spent more than five consecutive seasons in Allsvenskan until the 2000s. After relegations and promotions, GAIS made its first UEFA Cup appearance in 1975 against Śląsk Wrocław, losing 2–1 at home and 2–4 away. That same year GAIS was relegated again.

Supporters and rivalries

GAIS is Gothenburg's third most supported football club, with about 12–13% of local fans ranking it as their favorite. Attendance has increased from around 4,800 in Superettan to between 9,000 and 10,000 in Allsvenskan. The fan base has long been associated with working-class neighborhoods and left-wing sympathies. The supporter group Makrillarna, founded in 1961, presents the annual Honorary Mackerel award.

In 2018, GAIS allowed a supporter to act as assisting manager for one game against Halmstads BK, a unique move among Swedish clubs. The club's fiercest rivalry is with IFK Göteborg, first contested in September 1905; as of August 2025, they have played over 131 competitive matches, with IFK holding the edge. A historical but less intense rivalry exists with Örgryte IS, rooted in class distinctions. BK Häcken has not historically been a major rival, but recent top-tier successes have elevated competitive spirit. The ultras group GAIS Tifo, formed in 2006, has a friendship with ultras from BFC Dynamo.

Players

Karl-Alfred Jacobsson has been selected as both player of the century and player of the millennium by GAIS fans. The supporter group Makrillarna has presented the GAIS player of the year award, The Honorary Mackerel, at the end of each season since 1961. Notable players who have received the award, played over a hundred matches, made international appearances, or had a significant role include Frank Jacobsson, Leif Andersson, Gunnar Gren, Kurt Axelsson, Jan Olsson, and many others such as Fredrik Lundgren, Wánderson, and Luther Singh.
