Lore & Background

In "Emergence," Arthur convulses after a facehugger dies on him, leading to the birth of a newborn Xenomorph that escapes into the facility while his companions attempt to move his corpse. Earlier in the episode's timeline, Wendy hacks the system to release a grown Xenomorph from the lab, killing many scientists and creating chaos. After Kirsh tells him the Ocellus caused the lab accident, Boy Kavalier talks with that creature and considers using it to host a person in order to communicate with it. Meanwhile, Wendy demonstrates an unusual connection, using her skills to command the grown Xenomorph to kill Yutani soldiers before sparing her group. Critics noted this development as risky, with Matt Schimkowitz of The A.V. Club questioning if turning the Xenomorph into "Wendy's Krypto" was the intended direction for a horror story.

Reader's Guide

The sequence begins when Arthur regains consciousness outside the facility after the facehugger dies on him. He remembers events and convinces Slightly and Smee to return to get things clear, but he immediately convulses as a newborn Xenomorph bursts from his chest. Later, Wendy demonstrates a unique ability to communicate with the grown Xenomorph released in the lab; she uses these skills to command it to kill Yutani soldiers who have them at gunpoint. The episode concludes with a moral conflict: Nibs kills a soldier for throwing her toy into the ocean, and Joe incapacitates her with a gun. Alex Lawther explained this action by stating Joe reveals a hierarchy of care where biological humans take precedence, showing he values certain lives over others.
