The Ajax Youth Academy, located in Amsterdam, Netherlands, oversees 13 youth teams for players aged 7 to 18. It serves as the main development system for Dutch club Ajax, which relies on it to bring talented youngsters into the senior squad. As of September 2020, the CIES ranked the academy second globally for training players active in top UEFA divisions, with 77 graduates, behind Partizan Academy’s 85. UEFA defines a trained player as one who spent at least three seasons at the club between ages 15 and 21.
The academy has produced numerous Dutch internationals, including Johan Cruijff, Frank Rijkaard, Dennis Bergkamp, and Wesley Sneijder, among others from the 1900s through the 2010s. Its coaching philosophy centers on a 4–3–3 formation and the TIPS model—Technique, Insight, Personality, and Speed—each with ten criteria. Training sessions incorporate eight key ingredients: coordination, kicking and passing, moves to beat opponents, heading, finishing, position play, position game play, and small-sided games.
The academy’s facilities include Sportcomplex De Toekomst, a 5,000-capacity training ground for Jong Ajax, the women’s team, the amateur side, and all youth teams. It features seven fields and a training center. The adidas miCoach Performance Centre, built in 2011, uses motion analytics to scientifically train players in speed, distance, dribbling, heading, and shooting. Its ceiling collapsed in October 2013 and was subsequently rebuilt.
The academy has won numerous national titles across age groups, including 13 A-junioren Eredivisie championships, four B-junioren Eredivisie titles, and multiple cups and super cups. Current staff includes chairman Frank Eijken, head coach Frank Peereboom, assistant managers Yuri Rose and Urby Emanuelson, and three technical directors overseeing different age levels.
