Over the next few years, Najeeba’s powers grow; she can leave her body and travel the world, often taking the form of a Kponyungo, a dragon-like creature. At sixteen, her father discovers a glowing pink salt cube. Her village is attacked and its library burned. On the way to market, desert spirits attack; Najeeba saves her family as the Kponyungo, and her father is injured. At market, she sells the cube for enormous profit but is unmasked as a woman, attacked by jealous men, and defends herself with her powers. She returns home, uses the profit to restore the library, but her father dies soon after. She marries Idris and moves away. In the frame story, Najeeba asks Aro to train her in sorcery, and he agrees.

Reader's Guide

She Who Knows continues Okorafor’s exploration of discrimination, as noted by Noah Fram of BookPage, who wrote that the novella examines forms of bigotry that are 'less complicated' than those in Who Fears Death, such as women being allowed to purchase salt but not mine or sell it. Fram states that Najeeba’s family and hometown perpetuate 'senseless, unthinking sexism because their lives and livelihoods depend on it,' and that Okorafor’s central premise is that 'injustice persists because it is safe.' Racheal Chie of Strange Horizons wrote that the novella explores oppression of women, using witchcraft to highlight how women are misunderstood: 'If a man is smart, he is educated; but if a woman is smart, it is a source of suspicion—she is a witch.' The book was a finalist for the 2025 Locus Award for Best Novella.
