Lore & Background

General Interactive Co. was founded in 2016 in Singapore by Mark Fillon, though its team is now based around the world, including the United Kingdom and Brazil. The studio released its first game, Terroir, in 2017, and began development of Chinatown Detective Agency that year. A free alpha-level demo was released on Itch.io in March 2020, followed by a successful Kickstarter campaign that funded on April 28, 2020. An extended prologue subtitled Day One was released on Steam and Itch.io in September 2020. The full game launched on April 7, 2022.

The game features voice acting, with Singaporean and Malaysian voice actors cast for all the Singaporean characters. The plot begins with Amira Darma, a former Interpol officer, taking on a case for a businessman to locate an accountant who has fled the country. She later works for a wealthy heir to return stamps from his philatelist father's collection to their originating countries, gradually uncovering a web of conspiracies back in Singapore.

Reader's Guide

Chinatown Detective Agency received mixed or average reviews according to Metacritic. Critics noted its different take on tired cyberpunk settings and praised its cast and puzzle design, while also pointing out frustrating moments where puzzles could feel like doing homework. The game's depiction of a future Singapore was highlighted as a significant strength, with one Singaporean reviewer emphasizing the importance of including specific local details such as Singlish. However, inconsistencies in writing quality at different points were noted as a fault. The game's legacy lies in its attempt to blend the Carmen Sandiego-style travel-and-research gameplay with a cyberpunk noir narrative, offering a distinctive setting rarely seen in the adventure game genre.
