A Plague Tale: Requiem

Siblings seek a cure amid plague, rats, and the Inquisition.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is an action-adventure game released in 2022, developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Entertainment. It serves as the follow-up to 2019's A Plague Tale: Innocence and is the second title in the series. Players control siblings Amicia and Hugo de Rune as they travel through Southern France seeking a remedy for Hugo's blood disease, all while evading Inquisition soldiers and massive swarms of plague-carrying rats. The game earned generally favorable reviews and was nominated for five honors at The Game Awards 2022, including Game of the Year. A prequel titled Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, centered on the character Sophia, arrived in 2026.

Gameplay takes a third-person perspective, with players controlling Amicia against both human foes and rat hordes. While the core mechanics resemble the first game, combat has been expanded. Amicia uses a knife for stabbing, a sling for throwing rocks, and a crossbow to take down armored enemies. Crossbow bolts, pots, and rocks can be mixed with alchemical substances. Alongside the returning Ignifer and Extinguis (which light and extinguish flames), tar is new—it increases a light source's radius and can set enemies on fire. Levels are larger, offering more ways to progress. Stealth has been enhanced: Amicia no longer dies from a single hit, can re-enter stealth after being spotted, and can counter attacks when close to enemies. Hugo, who is linked to the plague, can use an "Echo" ability to reveal enemies through walls and can command rat swarms to overwhelm foes. Rats fear light, so the siblings must stay illuminated or be devoured; Amicia can manipulate them to solve puzzles or lure them into killing enemies. A progression system rewards players with skills based on playstyle—stealth-focused players unlock sneaking abilities, while lethal players gain combat skills. Gear can be upgraded at workbenches.

The story picks up in June 1349, six months after the first game. Siblings Amicia (voiced by Charlotte McBurney) and Hugo (Logan Hannan) live with their mother Beatrice (Lucy Briggs-Owen) and her apprentice Lucas (Kit Connor) under the protection of an alchemist group called the Order. An attack by hostile beekeepers reawakens the Prima Macula in Hugo. The family hides in a fortified Provencal town, where Beatrice seeks help from Order representative Vaudin (Antony Byrne).

Lore & Background

Set in June 1349, six months after the first game, the story follows Amicia and Hugo de Rune, along with their mother Beatrice and her apprentice Lucas, as they seek refuge with an organization of alchemists called the Order. After a hostile attack reawakens Hugo's Prima Macula, the group travels through Provence, Marseille, and the island of La Cuna, pursued by soldiers and mercenaries. The plot explores Hugo's connection to the plague and the Macula, culminating in a confrontation with Count Victor and Countess Emilie, who worship a previous Macula carrier. The game ends with Amicia preparing to find the next carrier and protector, and a post-credits scene shows a modern-era child with signs of the Macula.

Gameplay expands on the original with a significantly expanded combat system, including weapons like a knife, sling, and crossbow, and alchemical mixtures such as tar. Locations are larger, stealth is more forgiving—Amicia can survive multiple hits and return to stealth after discovery—and Hugo can use the Echo ability to reveal enemies or control rats. A progression system awards skills based on player approach, and gear can be upgraded at workbenches. The rats, averse to light, remain central to puzzles and combat.

Development by Asobo Studio focused on authenticity, collaborating with a doctor in Medieval History and drawing on team experiences. The setting moved from gloomy Aquitaine to colorful Provence to create contrast. Voice actors speak British English, unlike the French-accented English of the previous game. The game was announced at Microsoft's E3 2021 press conference and released on 18 October 2022 for PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox Series X/S, and a cloud-only Nintendo Switch version. The new console generation allowed rendering over 300,000 rats simultaneously.

Reader's Guide

A Plague Tale: Requiem is significant as a direct sequel that expands on its predecessor's mechanics and narrative scope. Its release on new-generation consoles enabled technical advancements, such as rendering over 300,000 rats simultaneously, which enhanced the game's signature environmental puzzles and horror elements. The game's five nominations at The Game Awards 2022, including Game of the Year, underscore its critical recognition within the action-adventure genre. The narrative deepens the lore of the Macula and the de Rune siblings' relationship, while introducing new characters like Sophia and Arnaud. The post-credits scene hints at a modern-day continuation, and a prequel titled Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, following Sophia, was released in 2026. The game's legacy includes its contribution to the series' world-building and its technical achievements in rendering large-scale rat swarms, which became a hallmark of the franchise.

The Thirty-Day Clock

The most talked-about pillar of The Blood of Dawnwalker is its unconventional approach to pacing. Rather than unfolding as a fixed sequence of missions, the campaign stretches across thirty in-game days, during which Coen must free his kidnapped family before Brencis's investiture ceremony. Crucially, the clock does not tick in real time or while the player wanders the open world at leisure. Days are consumed only when Coen commits to major narrative quests or takes actions that shift the story forward, a design choice the developers explicitly drew from tabletop role-playing sessions where a round represents a day. This structure gives the overarching plot a reactive, branching quality: the valley's fate shifts based on which quests are completed, in what order, and how much time is spent on side pursuits. Critics largely embraced the system as a refreshing departure from standard open-world pacing, though opinions split on its practical weight. Some reviewers felt the pressure was lighter than the premise suggested, while others found the looming deadline genuinely stressful, particularly when juggling multiple allies and competing objectives within a shrinking window.

Two Faces of Coen

At the heart of the gameplay loop sits a stark duality: Coen is a man by daylight and a creature of the night. In his human guise, he moves through Vale Sangora as a citizen capable of diplomacy, trade, and non-violent problem solving, and his combat leans on precise, directional swordplay. The moment the sun sets, however, his body shifts into a vampiric form that grants him heightened agility and the ability to scale and traverse terrain that is simply unreachable during the day. Combat transforms accordingly, trading blade work for claw strikes and biting attacks. This nocturnal state carries a cost: Coen must manage his bloodlust by feeding on humans or animals, and neglecting this need can turn quest givers, traders, and other key figures into his own victims. To supplement his daytime fighting, the herbalist Anca teaches him blood magic, giving him offensive tools even when his vampiric powers are suppressed. Progression is tracked across three separate skill trees, with wayside shrines scattered through the valley serving as both fast-travel nodes and resting spots where earned points can be spent on new abilities.

Vale Sangora Under the Blood Tax

The game's world is a gothic, fictional kingdom nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, set in the mid-fourteenth century. Its ruler, the ancient vampire Brencis, seizes power during a devastating plague by offering a seductive bargain: he lifts all existing taxes and promises every citizen a taste of undead blood that will cure the sickness. The price is a monthly "blood tax" of a few drops from each adult, collected during a communal gathering. In practice, the weak and infirm are quietly executed during the ritual, and the entire population is bound into servitude under the vampire lords. Coen's story begins when Brencis attempts to convert him into a loyal henchman; the procedure fails, and Coen emerges as a Dawnwalker—human by day, vampire by night—while Brencis and his court believe he died. His family is then seized and held for the ceremony marking Brencis's coronation as Prince. Over the course of his campaign, Coen can align with the vampire Lacra, who serves an unknown force seeking Brencis's destruction, or with Crake, the human resistance leader aiming to restore the murdered king's heir. The valley's hidden history also reveals the Augors, a secret society that has long employed Dawnwalkers to keep balance between humans and monsters.

From Witcher Veterans to a New Studio

The Blood of Dawnwalker is the debut title of Rebel Wolves, a Polish studio established in 2022 by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz—the director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—alongside other former CD Projekt developers. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game was announced in January 2025 and positioned as the first of a planned series of self-contained stories following Coen across different historical eras. It shipped for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 3, 2026, and cleared one million sales within its first three days. Critical reception was broadly positive, with reviewers singling out the writing and the interplay between Coen's two forms as standout strengths. The Witcher 3 comparison was nearly universal, a testament to the DNA of its creators. The 30-day time system generated the most debate, with praise and criticism coexisting. Perhaps the most telling signal of the team's momentum came within a week of launch, when Rebel Wolves opened hiring for sequel development, confirming that the Coen saga is far from over.
