Players control Clementine 'Clem/Graveyard Clem' McKinney, a war veteran and mech pilot who lost her army in the Red Expanse, a post-post-apocalyptic version of the American Southwest. Clem pilots the Desert Raptor MKII battle vehicle, which can be equipped with heavy-powered melee weapons, steam-powered siege weapons, explosive guns and cannons, and defensive systems such as thrusters and riot shields. The game blends combat with farming: Clem fights through regions filled with violent criminals and dangerous beasts, while her home—an isolated, run-down garage—serves as the player's base of operations. At the garage, players can customize the base, build water and power supplies, cook food, produce ammo, and raise animals.
