Legacy of Kain: Defiance

The final chronological chapter in the Legacy of Kain saga.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance is an action-adventure video game released in 2003. It was developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos Interactive for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Windows. Chronologically, it is the fifth and final installment in the Legacy of Kain series, and it is the only game in the series where players can control both Kain and Raziel.

The story follows the vampire lord Kain and his former lieutenant, now a wraith, Raziel. After Raziel was killed and resurrected as a wraith by the Elder God in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Kain travels backward through time. Raziel follows him into Nosgoth's past, where they uncover the conspiracies that doomed the land to eternal corruption. Having established his free will by refusing to kill Kain as prophesied, Raziel learns that Moebius the Time Streamer originally manipulated Kain into starting a genocidal war against vampires, leaving Kain as the last of his kind. By manipulating Raziel—whose free will makes his actions unpredictable to Moebius—Kain hopes to undo the consequences of his deeds and restore Nosgoth.

A digital emulated version of the PlayStation 2 release was made available on the PlayStation Store as part of the classics program for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on September 16, 2025. It launched within the game catalogue of the Premium tier of PlayStation Plus. A remastered version, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, was released on March 3, 2026.

In terms of gameplay, Defiance is the only series entry where both Raziel and Kain are playable. Earlier Soul Reaver games focused on Raziel, while the Blood Omen games focused on Kain. Unlike previous games where Kain could acquire different weapon types, the only weapon available to Kain here is the Soul Reaver. Kain wields the material Reaver, while Raziel carries the Reaver's spectral form along with several elemental reavers. Kain can obtain five emblems—balance, conflict, dimension, energy, and time—to enhance the Soul Reaver. Raziel retains all his previous weapons. By defeating enemies, both characters learn new combat techniques, such as uppercuts, mid-air slashes, and firing telekinetic energy orbs.

Lore & Background

The story continues from where Soul Reaver 2 ended. Kain saved Raziel's life by drawing the Soul Reaver from him, causing a time paradox that changes Nosgoth's history and separates the two. Kain seeks Moebius the Time Streamer for answers, while Raziel, held captive by the Elder God, escapes and searches for a way to avoid his fate of being imprisoned in the Soul Reaver. Both characters uncover murals depicting an ancient war between the Ancients and the Hylden, and prophecies of two champions: a Vampire champion wielding the Soul Reaver, and a Hylden champion wielding a flaming sword. Kain believes he is the Vampire champion, while Raziel discovers the Hylden champion resembles him and the spectral Soul Reaver.

Kain explores a Vampire citadel and completes the Balance Emblem. Raziel revives Janos Audron using the Heart of Darkness, leading to a confrontation where Raziel defeats Kain and tears Janos' heart from him. Kain, seemingly dying, vanishes through a portal. Raziel later finds a forge where the Soul Reaver absorbs the soul of Ariel, becoming pure of spirit. The Elder God's tentacles attempt to bury the forge but Raziel fights them off. During the events of Blood Omen, Kain's past self refuses to sacrifice himself, weakening the seal enough for the Hylden Lord to possess Janos, who strikes down Raziel's physical body. Kain awakens in the Demon Realm and fights his way back to Nosgoth, where he kills Moebius. Raziel impales Moebius' soul on the spectral Soul Reaver, revealing the Elder God's true form before devouring him.

Reader's Guide

Legacy of Kain: Defiance is notable as the only game in the series where both Kain and Raziel are playable, alternating between them at set intervals. The gameplay focuses on combat techniques learned by killing enemies, including uppercuts, mid-air slashes, and telekinetic orbs. Kain's only weapon is the Soul Reaver, which can be enhanced with five emblems: balance, conflict, dimension, energy, and time. Raziel retains his previous weapons and can acquire elemental reavers such as the Dark Reaver, which grants invisibility. Both characters share abilities like wall climbing and gliding, but have exclusive traits: Kain can jump large gaps, transform into bats, and cannot swim; Raziel can swim and shift into the spectral realm. The game was released digitally for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on September 16, 2025, as part of the PlayStation Plus Premium catalogue. A remastered version, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, was released on March 3, 2026.
