Lore & Background

The game's plot begins in 1888 with Jack the Ripper, who laments that his ritualistic murders have not unlocked a mystical power. A man named Legion appears and offers to share the power if Jack constructs an insane asylum for killers in Deadside, the land of the dead. Jack commits suicide. In the present day, Michael LeRoi becomes the current Shadow Man after voodoo priestess Mama Nettie bonds the Mask of Shadows to him. Nettie has a prophetic dream that Legion is preparing to usher in the Apocalypse by claiming the Dark Souls of damned warriors to create an immortal army. Michael must collect the Dark Souls and defeat the Five, a group of serial killers recruited by Legion, using his dead brother's teddy bear as a link between worlds. After assembling the Eclipser knife and triggering an eclipse, Michael confronts Legion in Deadside, ultimately defeating him but becoming stranded as lord of Deadside.

Development began with Acclaim Studios Teesside creating the game engine without a specific concept. Acclaim Entertainment offered about eight comic book series, and the developers chose Shadow Man. The development budget exceeded $6 million. The game was announced in 1997 and originally slated for late 1998 on Nintendo 64 and early 1999 for Windows, but was delayed to 1999. The design of Deadside drew heavily on decaying industrial structures in Northeast England, where the studio was headquartered, while the Asylum headquarters was based on Pieter Bruegel the Elder's painting The Tower of Babel.
