Reception
The game received mixed to negative reviews. Reviewing the PlayStation version, Electronic Gaming Monthly's Dindo Perez found the graphics substandard, while Todd Mowatt noted graphics improved from the previous Quarterback Club but said the AI was too easy to beat by a wide margin. IGN described the game as slow with weak graphics, not better than competitor Madden NFL 97, and advised waiting for NFL Quarterback Club '98. GamePro compared it unfavorably to Madden NFL 97, stating that while gameplay and features were solid, the graphics—though better on PlayStation than other versions—suffered from choppy scrolling and animation that made it difficult to follow the ball carrier. Jeff Kitts of GameSpot said players were slow, weather options poor, and penalties unrealistic. CNET criticized poor sound and graphics, lack of transactions except trades, and noted every team has the same playbook; they also stated game scores could peak into the 100s and that players cannot get tired or injured. Reviews for the Saturn version were similar. GamePro wrote that the game showed notable graphical and gameplay improvements over its rookie outing but was outdone by the Saturn version of Madden NFL '97, which had smoother graphics and responsive commentary. Next Generation called the game a huge improvement over the previous installment but still clearly inferior to Madden NFL '97, and criticized the Saturn version's less bright colors; however, they praised the tackling mechanics as remarkably innovative and hoped they would be imitated. Rich Leadbetter of Sega Saturn Magazine said the game was well-done in some respects, particularly the selection of plays and the ability to replay or create new situations, but was out-gunned and out-done by Madden '97 due to below-average sprite scaling and animation, lack of PAL optimization, and unintuitive controls.
