The Face on the Milk Carton (film)

Plot

Sixteen-year-old Janie Jessmon has a comfortable life with her parents Miranda and Frank, plus a close friend named Sarah Charlotte. That changes when she sees a missing child’s face on Sarah’s milk carton—three-year-old Jennifer Sands—and realizes it’s her own. In the attic, Janie discovers a trunk filled with belongings of someone called Hannah. Pressing her parents about the lack of baby photos, they confess they’re actually her grandparents, and Hannah is her real mother.

They say Hannah, involved in a cult, arrived one day with three-year-old Janie. Suspicious that she might have been kidnapped, Janie and a friend named Reeve find the Sands family and notice Janie shares their distinctive red hair. She shows Hannah’s parents the milk carton; they think Hannah might have taken Janie and pretended she was her daughter. Janie then meets her biological parents, Jonathan and Sada Sands, plus older brother Stephen and younger sister Jodie, though neither sibling seems happy about it.

When Janie tries to return to the Jessmons, Stephen catches her at a bus station. He explains that during a childhood trip to a shoe store, he was supposed to watch her but didn’t, allowing Hannah to take her. Janie forgives him. Still, she chooses to go back to her adoptive parents.

Jonathan accepts this with sadness, while Jodie and Stephen don’t. Janie reassures Jodie they will always be sisters. On the drive back with Sada, Janie apologizes for being bad. As Janie and Frank Jessmon enter their house, Sada Sands meets Miranda Jessmon, who offers a warm handshake.
