Composition
"Heartbeat" is a pop song in F-sharp minor, set in common time at 128 beats per minute. Its chord progression follows a i-VI-iv-v pattern, with a chorus key change to B minor before returning to F-sharp minor for the next verse. The lyrics describe a night out at clubs with friends. A drum beat mimicking a heartbeat doubles in tempo when the narrator catches the attention of a romantic interest on the dancefloor.
Critical reception
Music critics praised "Heartbeat". Scott Plagenhoef of Pitchfork called it "the best song of the year" and "a deceptively simple and surprisingly beautiful articulation of basic human need". Barry Walters of Rolling Stone wrote that it "evokes your favorite punk/dance mash-up and betters it". Jody Rosen of The Village Voice noted the chorus "edges toward rock and a melody durable enough to withstand countless repeated listenings". Raymond Fiore of Entertainment Weekly deemed it an "indie-cred masterstroke". The song ranked 32nd on the 2004 Pazz & Jop list. Pitchfork placed it at number one on its "Top 50 Singles of 2004", calling it "a perfect pop song", and later ranked it 17th on its top 500 songs of the 2000s. It was also included in The Pitchfork 500 collection.
