Background and composition

The song has been described as Eurodisco, bubblegum pop, and glam rock. Diamandis told the BBC News website that the track reflects her past obsession with Hollywood and celebrity culture, which she now considers unhealthy. She stated to The Sun that the song is a sarcastic and cynical take on commercial aspects of America, expressing both love for the country and disdain for its pop culture influence.

Critical reception

Fraser McAlpine of the BBC Chart Blog called Hollywood a properly amazing pop song, noting its cultural and political insight into America. He remarked that Diamandis enjoys singing the word Hollywood as much as critiquing its ego. Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian described the song as perky.

Music video

The music video was directed by Kinga Burza and released on YouTube on 30 November 2009. Filmed in a house resembling a palace in West London, it depicts an American patriotic party with decorations and clothing featuring American flags. Characters and objects symbolising American stereotypes appear, including cheerleaders, jocks, American football players, a pageant queen, paparazzi, a cowgirl, baseball players, look-alikes of Elvis Presley, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and President Barack Obama, hot dogs, popcorn and an Academy Award. Chilly Gonzales created a stripped-down remix, for which Dan Knight filmed a video with a 1980s performance aesthetic, featuring Gonzales and Diamandis on a fictional Estonian television programme called Pop! with Estonian subtitles.
