Idol Showdown is a free-to-play fighting game released in 2023 by Besto Games. It’s an unofficial fan project that casts VTubers from Hololive Production as its roster of fighters. Upon release, the game was well received, and its developers have stated they intend to add more characters through future updates.
In gameplay, Idol Showdown is a one-on-one fighter where the goal is to knock out the opponent. Before a match, each player picks a main fighter and a secondary assist character, who can be called in for extra attacks. Every fighter is modeled after a Hololive VTuber and comes with their own unique moves and specials. Players can chain light, medium, and heavy attacks into combos, and a “superchat” meter builds up during battle, allowing for powerful super moves.
The game supports both online and local multiplayer, as well as single-player modes against AI. These include a tutorial for practicing each character’s moves, an arcade mode requiring a streak of wins, and “Virtual Frontier,” a mode where players face a series of fights with random modifiers and items that alter the experience.
Currently, Idol Showdown features 12 playable fighters and 14 “collabs”—characters that only appear as assists. Several other Hololive members show up elsewhere in the game.
Development took Besto Games two years. The online multiplayer uses rollback netcode. Although it’s an unofficial fan game, some of the featured VTubers volunteered to record voice lines for their in-game counterparts.
The game was first shown in a gameplay trailer on March 22, 2023, and launched on Steam on May 5, 2023. The initial release included 8 playable characters: seven current Japanese Hololive VTubers and retired member Kiryu Coco. The developers promised three more playable characters in updates. At Evo 2023, Usada Pekora was revealed as the ninth fighter, added on August 11, 2023.
On November 15, 2023, Cover Corporation launched Holo Indie, a publishing label for fan games, citing Idol Showdown as a direct inspiration. Idol Showdown joined the brand on March 17, 2024. On February 31, 2025, the developers announced Hakui Koyori as the next fighter, and she was added on June 5, 2025.
Reception was positive. Siliconera’s Elliot Gostick gave it a 7/10, calling it beginner-friendly and a love letter to Hololive’s community, though noting limited appeal outside that audience. PCGamesN
