Ms. Marvel (miniseries)

A Pakistani-American teen gains cosmic powers and finds her place.

Last updated

Ms. Marvel is an American television miniseries created by Bisha K. Ali for Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics character Kamala Khan. It is the seventh television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and follows a 16-year-old Avengers fangirl who gains her own powers. The series is part of Phase Four of the MCU and sets up the events of the film The Marvels.

Cast and characters

Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakistani-American from Jersey City who loves drawing, gaming, and writing fan fiction about heroes like Captain Marvel. After finding a magical bangle, she can control cosmic energy to form hard light constructs, and the season finale reveals she is a mutant. Executive producer Sana Amanat said Kamala brings a grounded, bright perspective to the MCU. Vellani, who shares Kamala’s background and love for Marvel, said her character enjoys the simplicity of having powers rather than worrying about school, relationships, family, or culture.

Head writer Bisha K. Ali called Kamala an avatar for fans who grew up with the MCU. Matt Lintz plays Bruno Carrelli, Kamala’s best friend and a tech genius with a crush on her; Lintz said Bruno stays very loyal to her after she gets powers. Yasmeen Fletcher plays Nakia Bahadir, Kamala’s close friend who runs for the mosque board. Fletcher described Nakia as strong, opinionated, and a badass who breaks stereotypes for hijab girls, while director Meera Menon noted she balances confidence with teenage vulnerability.

Nakia is Lebanese-American and mixed race, like Fletcher, unlike the Turkish-American comics version. Zenobia Shroff plays Muneeba Khan, Kamala’s stricter mother who wants to protect her potential. Mohan Kapur plays Yusuf Khan, a warm, caring father. Saagar Shaikh plays Aamir Khan, Kamala’s aloof, very religious older brother.

Laurel Marsden plays Zoe Zimmer, the popular social media influencer at school. Azhar Usman plays Najaf, a halal food vendor Kamala knows.

Production

Marvel Studios began development on a Ms. Marvel television series for Disney+ by August 2019, with Bisha K. Ali hired as head writer after working on Loki. Ali declined an extension on Loki to create her pitch, believing Marvel responded to her general vibe and energy conveying that the series was personal to her as a fan, a South Asian person, a Pakistani woman, and a woman from a Muslim background. All directors worked closely together to create a seamless transition between episodes. Ali, El Arbi, and Fallah serve as executive producers, along with Kamala Khan co-creator Sana Amanat and Marvel Studios executives Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Brad Winderbaum.

Marketing

The first trailer was released on March 15, 2022, and many commentators noted the change to Kamala's powers from the comics to harnessing cosmic energy and forming constructs with magical bangles. Linda Codega at Gizmodo called the trailer as adorable, fun, and exciting as the comics, full of excellent directorial decisions. A documentary short, A Fan's Guide to Ms. Marvel, was released on Disney+ on June 1, 2022. Marvel's Marvel Must Haves program revealed merchandise related to each episode starting June 7 and concluding July 15, 2022.
