Police (TV series)
BBC documentary series that changed police handling of rape cases.
In 1982, the BBC aired a twelve-part documentary series called Police, focusing on the Thames Valley force. Produced by Roger Graef and directed by Charles Stewart, it won a BAFTA for best factual series. The show’s third episode, A Complaint of Rape, sparked major debate by showing three male officers harshly questioning a rape complainant. Public outcry prompted the UK police to alter their handling of rape cases, with Reading station soon establishing a dedicated squad of five female officers.
