Eischied

A southern-bred chief of detectives works the streets of New York.

Last updated

Eischied, an American crime drama, ran on NBC from September 1979 into July 1980. The series followed the lead character from the 1978 miniseries To Kill a Cop, itself adapted from Robert Daley’s 1976 novel. In the United Kingdom it aired as Chief of Detectives, while West German viewers in 1980 knew it as Schauplatz New York.

Synopsis

Joe Don Baker stars as Earl Eischied, the tough, brilliant, southern-bred New York City Police Department Chief of Detectives. His complimentary catchphrase was "Ya done good," often directed at younger detectives or officers. Eischied kept a pet cat named "PC" (as in "police commissioner"). He worked the streets alongside his detectives, carrying a Smith & Wesson Model 10 .38 Special snub-nosed revolver concealed inside his waistband.

Though willing to bend rules in pursuit of a case, he would never break the law. His southern drawl masked a sharp intellect and encyclopedic knowledge of police work, and he showed great empathy for crime victims. NBC reran all 13 episodes in its original Friday night time slot during the summer of 1983.
