Background and Production
CBS News assembled one of the largest collections of World War One footage for this series. The 26 half-hour episodes drew on archival material from national and private archives, some previously unseen by the public. Morton Gould composed an original score, performed by Alfredo Antonini conducting the CBS Symphony Orchestra. The series premiered on Tuesday nights at 8 pm Eastern Time, then moved mid-season to Sunday nights at 6:30 pm, possibly due to ratings competition from ABC's Combat! and NBC's Mr. Novak.
Overview
The series opens with the rivalries and tensions among major European powers from 1870 to 1914, culminating in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo by members of the Serbian Black Hand. It then follows the war's course, covering the involvement of Japan, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, Romania, and the United States, as well as various fronts and campaigns. Episodes examine German atrocities in Belgium, the war at sea, trench warfare, the Russian Revolution, the Italian Front, air warfare, America's entry, home fronts, music of the era, final campaigns, and the war's legacy.
