The 34 segments marked the animation debut of Superboy, his teenage alter ego Clark Kent, Lana Lang, and Krypto the super-powered dog. The show featured stock animation and limited movement due to budget constraints.

In 1985, Warner Home Video put eight episodes on VHS as part of the Super Powers collection, which also included Aquaman, Batman, and Superman, and those tapes came out again in 1996. The Superboy segments are missing from the DVD releases of The New Adventures of Superman because of a rights dispute between Warner Bros. and the estate of co-creator Jerry Siegel over the Superboy name. Streaming platforms offer the shorts from seasons two and three, but as of 2023, season one has never been made available on any home video format.

The series premiered on September 10, 1966 as part of The New Adventures of Superman, a 30-minute program with two Superman shorts and one Superboy segment. The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure, first broadcast on September 9, 1967, included new Superboy and Superman segments plus Aquaman, Aqualad, and rotating guest stars such as the Atom, the Flash, Kid Flash, Green Lantern, and the Teen Titans. The Batman/Superman Hour premiered on September 14, 1968, featuring Superboy and Superman shorts alongside Batman, Robin, and Batgirl.
