Cartoon Teletales
Live storytelling with drawings and a live child audience.
Cartoon Teletales was a children's television series that aired on ABC from 1948 to 1950, becoming the network's first children's program. It originated as a local show in Philadelphia in May 1948, moved to New York as a late-afternoon program in June, and expanded nationally in November. Each episode featured an original story told by Jack Luchsinger, illustrated with 10–12 drawings by his brother Chuck Luchsinger as the tale unfolded, with musical accompaniment by organist Rosa Rio. A small in-studio audience of children listened and made suggestions. Viewers were encouraged to submit their own drawings for prizes and on-air display, and contests drew as many as 5,600 entries a month during 1949. At the end of each episode, Chuck gave a drawing lesson.
