Elmer would cause Conrad to be hit with pies or flour, or be pranked. A female elephant named Elmira was briefly featured but dropped due to lack of popularity. Conrad also showed short films such as Our Gang and hosted guests like Roy Rogers. The puppet was made of papier-mâché by prop-man Emil von Knauf and had a trunk-like sleeve for Hermann's right arm.

John Conrad

In the mid-1960s, he hosted the radio program John Conrad and Max, which featured a troublesome fictional turntable operator. Conrad passed away at age 86 on February 7, 2006, in Westlake Village, California.
