Aerodrom (band)

Croatian and Yugoslav rock band formed in 1978.

Last updated

Aerodrom is a Croatian and Yugoslav rock band formed in Zagreb in 1978 by guitarist, vocalist and principal songwriter Jurica 'Jura' Pađen. The group became a popular act on the Yugoslav rock scene, initially performing progressive rock before shifting to a new wave-influenced sound and achieving commercial success with their 1983 album 'Obične ljubavne pjesme'.

History

Jurica Pađen began his career in 1970 as guitarist for Zoo Band, later playing with Spectrum and Hobo. In 1972 he joined Grupa 220, recording their album 'Slike' before the group disbanded in 1975. Pađen and Husein Hasanefendić then formed Parni Valjak, with whom he recorded two studio albums. When Hasanefendić and vocalist Aki Rahimovski were drafted into the Yugoslav People's Army in 1978, Parni Valjak went on hiatus, and Pađen formed Aerodrom.

The initial lineup included vocalist Zlatan Živković, bass guitarist Remo Krstanović Cartagine, drummer Paolo Sfeci, and keyboardist Mladen Krajnik. Pađen had briefly considered Jura Stublić as vocalist but decided against it due to Stublić's deep voice. The band's name was inspired by Pađen's relationship with a stewardess.

Legacy

Aerodrom's song 'Obična ljubavna pesma' was covered by Polish musicians on the 2001 album 'Yugoton' under the title 'Gdy Miasto Śpi (Snem Kamiennym)', and later by Croatian band Postolar Tripper on their 2007 album. Croatian singer Marko Tolja and the Croatian Radiotelevision Jazz Orchestra recorded a swing cover of 'Stavi pravu stvar' in 2017. In 2000, the song 'Fratello' was ranked number 87 on the Rock Express Top 100 Yugoslav Rock Songs of All Times list.
