Koenma is the son of King Enma, the ruler of the afterlife, serving as his representative in the Spirit World. Koenma offers this revival through a series of tests, eventually appointing Yusuke to the title of "Spirit Detective" (Reikai Tantei). This role charges Yusuke with investigating supernatural activity in the Human World. As the series progresses and stakes rise, Koenma is involved in critical decisions regarding the barrier between worlds and the fate of humanity.
