Concealment
Vanish behind the wall and let their bullets find only air.
Concealment is a defensive tactical status in the XCOM series that reduces an enemy's ability to accurately target a soldier. Introduced as a Psyker power in XCOM: Enemy Unknown and refined across subsequent titles, it represents the idea that a well-hidden operative becomes a harder kill, forcing the enemy to commit more resources or risk a missed shot. In practice, concealment layers on top of the existing cover system (full cover and partial cover) to create a graduated defensive posture. It is a finite, turn-limited effect rather than a permanent state, making it a key tool in action-economy management during the turn-based tactical phase of each mission.

Lore & Background
In the XCOM universe, concealment is not merely a game mechanic but a reflection of how a small, under-resourced resistance force survives against a numerically superior alien or Chimeran enemy. Soldiers trained in field craft learn to use terrain, low light, and disciplined stillness to become effectively invisible to scanning sensors and targeting AI. The Psyker class, drawing on latent telepathic ability, can project a mental 'shroud' over a fellow operative, scrambling the enemy's targeting solution for several turns.
By the events of XCOM 2, the Adversary's technology has evolved to include active counter-surveillance. Enemy units can now spend their action to 'spot' a concealed soldier, stripping the bonus and exposing them to full-damage fire. This creates a cat-and-mouse dynamic: the player must decide whether to keep a concealed unit passive and safe, or risk the exposure that comes with acting. The Psi Ops class, the evolved form of the Psyker, carries refined versions of these concealment powers, reflecting years of XCOM's research into telepathic combat applications.
Strategically, concealment embodies the core XCOM tension—every action has a cost. A soldier who stays concealed preserves their life but forgoes the opportunity to fire, heal, or reposition. The player must weigh the value of a single missed enemy shot against the cumulative damage of a soldier who never fires back.
Reader's Guide
Concealment is a turn-limited status effect that reduces the hit chance of any enemy attempting to target the affected soldier. It does not grant invulnerability; it shifts the probability in the defender's favor, making missed shots more likely. In XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within, the Psyker class can apply Concealment to a friendly unit as a psychic power, typically lasting a set number of turns. In XCOM 2, the system was expanded: the Psi Ops class carries refined concealment abilities, and the environment itself can contribute to a soldier's hidden state when paired with full cover.
Concealment interlocks tightly with the cover system. A soldier in full cover who also carries a concealment status enjoys a compounded defensive bonus, making them the hardest target on the board. However, in XCOM 2, enemy units can spend their action to 'spot' a concealed soldier, removing the status and exposing them. This creates a critical decision point: do you keep your best sniper concealed and passive, or do you risk the exposure of acting?
Morale and action economy feed into concealment decisions. A low-morale squad is less willing to hold position while concealed, and the player must manage the opportunity cost of a soldier who never fires. Strategically, concealment is best applied to high-value targets (heavy weapons, medics) during the enemy's turn, then peeled off when the threat has passed. The rule evolved from a simple Psyker buff in EU/EW into a multi-layered system in XCOM 2 that interacts with spotting, cover quality, and class-specific abilities.
Did You Know?
- In XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the Psyker's Concealment power was one of the few ways to protect a soldier without spending a separate cover action, making it a force multiplier for small squads.
- Concealment stacks with full cover to create the highest defensive posture available to a soldier in the tactical phase, but acting (firing, moving) can break the concealed state.
