All modes and features from NHL 12 remain in NHL 13. New features include EA Sports Hockey IQ, which makes CPU-controlled players and teammates smarter by reacting to everything on the ice. Skaters can better prevent scoring opportunities, while goaltenders gain new desperation saves by identifying potential scoring threats. Hockey IQ includes over five times as many strategy options as previous current-generation NHL titles, and players can develop their own plays for computer AI. According to Dean Richards, general manager of the NHL series, the development team spent more time on AI in NHL 13 than in the past three years combined. True Performance Skating is a new physics-based skating engine with over 1,000 new animations created using motion capture. The engine comprises explosiveness, top-end speed, and momentum. Explosiveness governs acceleration from gliding or stationary states. Top-end speed allows players to skate as fast as real-life counterparts. Momentum affects turning, shooting, and passing accuracy, making recovery from mistakes harder. The new animations combined with the Skill Stick enable new plays and dekes.
National teams
In NHL 13, any player absent from the official leagues is also absent from national teams. The game’s creators fill out the remaining rosters. The demo offers three HUT Item Packs usable in the full game: one for winning the NHL Moments Live demo moment, another for beating Team USA and the HUT playoff tournament, and a third for inviting a friend to play the demo.
