Gameplay

Players engage in dogfights across nine environments, choosing from 18 ships split evenly between Terran and Kilrathi. Multiplayer modes include eight-on-eight teamplay, 16-player free-for-all, capship battles, a capture-the-flag variant called Satellite, and one-on-one duels. Single-player modes include Asteroids, Training Modes, and Melees, which unlock ship types.

Relation to previous Wing Commander games

Unlike earlier Wing Commander games, Arena uses a top-down perspective on a 2D plane with a third axis for special maneuvers, and its control scheme resembles a first-person shooter.
