Cyclops
The first X-Man whose life is defined by the uncontainable power in his eyes and the heavy burden of leadership.
Scott Summers, known as Cyclops, is a mutant superhero created by writer Stan Lee and artist/co-plotter Jack Kirby. He first appeared in The X-Men #1 (cover dated September 1963) as the first member recruited by Professor X and a founding member of the team. As a subspecies of human born with superhuman abilities, he emits powerful beams of energy from his eyes that can only be controlled with special eyewear he must always wear. Serving as one of the X-Men's primary leaders, Scott fights for peace and equality between mutants and humans, evolving from a traditional heroic figure into a morally complex leader over the decades.

Lore & Background
Scott Summers was born the first son of Corsair and is the older brother of Havok. His most enduring love interest is his wife, Jean Grey, with whom he has a daughter named Rachel Summers from an alternate future. He also shares significant relationships with ex-wife Madelyne Pryor—a clone of Jean and mother of his son Cable—and fellow X-Man Emma Frost. His archenemy is Mister Sinister, a geneticist obsessed with the Summers and Grey bloodlines who has manipulated events in Scott's life for decades.
While initially portrayed as a traditional hero counterposed to antiheroes, later decades depict him as increasingly morally ambiguous. Key storylines shaping his legacy include The Dark Phoenix Saga (1980), Mutant Massacre (1986), X-Cutioner's Song (1992–1993), and Avengers vs. X-Men (2012). He remains a central figure in major company-wide events like Messiah Complex, Utopia, and the Krakoan Age.
Reader's Guide
Cyclops is the first mutant recruited by Professor X to lead his team toward harmony between humans and mutants. He possesses no control over the powerful energy beams emitted from his eyes without special eyewear, a limitation that has defined his character since Stan Lee described him as a 'tortured hero' who could not control his power. His leadership style evolved significantly: in the 1970s and 80s, he balanced command responsibilities with personal desires, often clashing with Wolverine for Jean's attention.
By X-Men #201 (January 1986), he ceded leadership to Storm before returning to lead the original team in X-Factor. In the 2000s, under writer Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men, Scott adopted a new attitude and temporarily lost his powers following a psychic intervention by Emma Frost that forced him to confront his traumatic past. Whether leading the 'Blue team' in the 1990s or navigating the Krakoan Age, he remains the tactical center of the X-Men.
Did You Know?
- Cyclops's father, Corsair, was created by artist Dave Cockrum and introduced in X-Men #107 (October 1977) to tie the character to the Starjammers.
- His son Cable was infected with a techno-organic virus as a child and was taken to the future by Rachel Summers to be saved.
- In 1986, Marvel editors decided Cyclops should star in a new series (X-Factor) rather than retire from superhero life, a move writer Claremont felt tarnished Scott's persona.
