The genus Varicus comprises small gobies found in the western Atlantic Ocean. A reexamination of the group in 2016 led to the description of several new species, expanding the known diversity. Species include the twilight goby (Varicus adamsi), ocellated splitfin goby (Varicus cephalocellatus), decorated splitfin goby (Varicus decorum), Godzilla goby (Varicus lacerta), orangebelly goby (Varicus marilynae), banded splitfin goby (Varicus nigritus), spotted-sail goby (Varicus veliguttatus), and others. The whiteband goby, formerly known as Varicus imswe, is now placed in the genus Paedovaricus. Varicus is closely related to the genus Chriolepis, and now contains some species formerly included there.
