Gorgany Nature Reserve

A strict nature reserve protecting relic Stone pine and old-growth forest.

It was established in 1996 to protect relic stands of Stone pine trees. The reserve is notable for containing 46% old-growth forest, one of the last and largest such stands in Europe.

Topography

The Gorgany Nature Reserve sits on a steep landscape shaped by the Wurzburg glaciation. Its bedrock is strongly-layered sedimentary flysch, which breaks into debris fields called 'gorgan'. Elevations range from 710 to 1754 meters. The range trends northwest to southeast over Cretaceous and Quaternary conglomerates, sandstones, clay, and marls. A dense network of 30 mountain streams feeds into the Bystrytsia River, and coniferous forests cover the terrain.

Flora and fauna

Natural forest covers 76% of the territory, with 46% being virgin old-growth forest totaling over 2110 ha. Dominant trees in old-growth stands are spruce and pine; relic pines decay to produce soil for successor fir and beech forests. Lower elevations are mixed deciduous and coniferous. The most numerous non-tree plants are herbaceous perennials, with fewer shrubs such as cranberries, heather, and blueberries. Altitude zones include stream valley mixed forest, spruce forest from 770–1200 meters, pure fir and cedar-spruce forest from 1200–1600 meters, and sub-alpine pine shrubs with moss and lichen above 1600 meters. Lower stream terraces feature speckled alders with grass cover including white butterbur, meadowsweet, marsh horsetail, marsh-marigold, and narrow-leaved bittercress. Scientists have mapped 17 characteristic forest types due to altitude zoning, soil differences, and micro-climate factors.
