La Foncalada

La Foncalada was originally placed near the city walls of Oviedo, next to an ancient Roman road. It is erected over a spring, with a rectangular source about 4 metres wide. The building has the shape of a vaulted chapel and is crowned by the royal ensign of the Victory Cross, symbol of Asturias.

Reader's Guide

La Foncalada is significant as the only surviving civil architectural item for public use from the Early Middle Ages, providing rare insight into non-religious public infrastructure of that period. Built by King Alfonso III of Asturias in the 9th century, it demonstrates the continuation of Roman engineering traditions in the early medieval kingdom. Its Pre-Romanesque style and inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage Site List since 1998 underscore its cultural and historical importance. The fountain's decoration, including the Victory Cross and two Latin inscriptions, reflects the intertwining of royal authority and Christian symbolism. The inscriptions—one invoking protection for the pious and victory over enemies, the other asking for the sign of salvation on the fountain—highlight the spiritual and protective functions attributed to public works. As a municipal property of Oviedo Town Hall, it remains a tangible link to the Asturian monarchy and early medieval urban life.
