Gunung Leuser National Park is a protected area covering 7,927 km² in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, straddling the border of Aceh and North Sumatra provinces. It is named after Mount Leuser (3,119 m) and protects a wide range of ecosystems, including an orangutan sanctuary at Bukit Lawang. Together with Bukit Barisan Selatan and Kerinci Seblat National Parks, it forms the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, a World Heritage Site.

Gunung Leuser National Park is 150 km long and over 100 km wide, mostly mountainous. About 40% of the park, mainly in the north-west, is steep and over 1,500 m in elevation, billed as the largest wilderness area in Southeast Asia. Eleven peaks are over 2,700 m, with Mount Leuser being the highest of the Leuser Range. The park is one of two remaining habitats for Sumatran orangutans, and in 1971, Herman Rijksen established the Ketambe Research Station for orangutan study. Other mammals include the Sumatran elephant, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros, siamang, Sumatran serow, sambar deer, and leopard cat. After researchers placed 28 camera traps in July 2011, they found one male and six female Sumatran rhinos, predicting a population of no more than 27 in the park, out of an estimated 200 in Sumatra and Malaysia.

Gunung Leuser National Park sprawls across 7,927 square kilometers in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, with roughly a quarter of its area falling within Aceh province and the remaining three-quarters in North Sumatra. Nestled within the Barisan mountain range, the park takes its name from Mount Leuser, which rises to 3,119 meters. Stretching approximately 150 kilometers in length and more than 100 kilometers in width, the landscape is predominantly mountainous. The north-western quadrant, encompassing about forty percent of the total area, features steep terrain climbing above 1,500 meters and is widely regarded as the largest contiguous wilderness in all of Southeast Asia, making it a prime destination for serious trekking. In contrast, roughly twelve percent of the park, concentrated in the lower southern half, sits below 600 meters above sea level. The park harbors eleven peaks exceeding 2,700 meters. While Mount Leuser itself ranks as the third-highest summit in the Leuser Range, the true crown jewel is Mount Tanpa Nama at 3,466 meters, which holds the distinction of being Sumatra's second-highest peak, surpassed only by Mount Kerinci at 3,805 meters.
Biodiversity & Endangered Mega-Fauna
The park stands as one of only two remaining strongholds on Earth for the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), a fact that underscores its irreplaceable conservation value. In 1971, primatologist Herman Rijksen founded the Ketambe Research Station, a dedicated zone for long-term orangutan study, while a separate sanctuary at Bukit Lawang provides additional protection for the species. Beyond primates, the park shelters a remarkable assemblage of large mammals including the Sumatran elephant, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros, siamang gibbon, Sumatran serow, sambar deer, and leopard cat. Ecosystem Services Under Pressure
The Leuser ecosystem provides critical services that extend far beyond its borders. Groundwater reservoirs are being rapidly depleted, and several rivers now run completely dry for portions of the year, forcing both households and industries to brace for shortages and rising water costs. The hydrological consequences of forest conversion are stark: annual storm runoff from secondary forest is roughly three times greater than from an equivalent primary forest catchment. In Aceh, farmers have documented escalating droughts and devastating floods tied to watercatchment degradation. In May 1998, more than five thousand hectares of intensive rice cultivation were rendered unproductive after twenty-nine irrigation schemes failed due to water scarcity. The December 2000 floods proved catastrophic, claiming at least 190 lives, displacing 660,000 people, and inflicting nearly ninety million dollars in losses on Aceh province. Hydroelectric plants in regencies such as Aceh Tenggara, designed as small-scale economic operations, have suffered worsening conditions as increased erosion forces operators to clear sediments from turbines, causing power interruptions, higher costs, and blade damage; one plant shut down entirely due to insufficient water. Meanwhile, coastal fisheries and aquaculture, valued at over 171 million dollars annually, face threats if freshwater inflows decline further.
Conservation Status & Community-Led Ecotourism
Together with Bukit Barisan Selatan and Kerinci Seblat National Parks, Gunung Leuser forms the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation that recognizes the region's outstanding universal value. Within the park, low-impact ecotourism is increasingly viewed as a powerful, nonconsumptive use that gives surrounding communities tangible economic incentives to protect rather than exploit the forest. Tangkahan, a village roughly seven to eight hours by road from Medan, exemplifies this model: it welcomes approximately 4,000 foreign visitors and 40,000 domestic tourists annually. Many residents have transitioned from illegal logging to tourism-related work, and with modest training they can effectively serve visitors. All guests are required to register at the Tangkahan Visitor Center before selecting from fixed-price packages that range up to four days and three nights, with porter fees also standardized. Trekking routes can be traversed on foot or accompanied by elephants. While accommodation consists of modest inns and electricity is limited to generator power, the community's shift toward sustainable livelihoods represents a compelling case study in how conservation and local prosperity can reinforce one another.
