Aditi Swami
First Indian woman to win individual compound world gold.
Aditi Swami, born on 15 June 2006, is an Indian compound archer. She made history at the 2023 World Championships by winning the gold medal in the women's individual compound event, the first Indian woman to do so. At just 17, she also became the youngest world champion in archery during the World Cup era (post-2006).
Her father, Gopichand, a maths teacher, moved from a nearby village to Satara to support her training. When she was 12, he took her to Shahu Stadium to introduce her to sports. While she saw children playing football and training in athletics, she chose archery, which a small group was practicing in a corner. She later trained under coach Pravin Sawant in a sugarcane field.
In 2023, she was part of India’s first-ever gold medal-winning women’s team at the World Archery Championships, alongside Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Parneet Kaur. That same year, she won two gold medals at the World Archery Youth Championships and was also on the gold medal-winning Indian team at the 2022 Asian Games. On 9 January 2024, she received the Arjuna Award from the President of India.
