Plot
The Spooksville novellas center on a group of friends in their bizarre home town, which hosts supernatural and unexplained occurrences. Plots often involve inter-dimensional travel, extraterrestrial life, time travel, and the lost continents of Mu/Lemuria and Atlantis, as well as magic. The group explores the town, escapes trouble, and saves it from dark forces. The books are chronological but may be read in a different order.
Characters
The main characters are five young friends: Adam Freeman, the leader; Watch, the brains; and Sara "Sally" Wilcox, the realist, who appear in all 24 novels. Cindy Makey appears in the second novella and remains for the rest of the series. Bryce Poole becomes more involved as the series progresses, eventually solidifying the group. Recurring characters include the town witch Ann Templeton and Bum, the friendly homeless ex-mayor. George Sanders and Tira Jones participate in a few adventures. Mr. Patton, owner of the army surplus store, appears in some stories. In almost every novella, the group befriends a person or creature who assists them.
Books
The series begins with newcomer Adam meeting Sally and Watch, and experiencing his new home's strangeness for the first time. The trio then searches for a boy held by a ghost. Later, four kids get trapped in a self-closing cave. Aliens kidnap the children. Ancient cryonically frozen Atlantians attack the town. The kids visit Ann's castle and become trapped inside. Adam, Sally, and Watch return to the secret path to rescue Bryce Poole, ending up in a different alternate Spooksville. Magical creatures invade the town. The group finds a wish-granting stone and learns its dangers. Misfortune follows a cat they find. A doorway to the past opens, unleashing dinosaurs and flying reptiles. The kids go on a treasure hunt past a dragon. They suspect their new teacher is a monster. On Halloween, the kids get trapped in a cursed house that turns them into their costumes. Energy-based extradimensional beings cross over and possess people. A wind-up toy enables time travel. A closet monster kidnaps Cindy. Giant crabs attack the beach. A vampire gang invades, and the only way to stop them is to defeat the queen. Someone casts a spell on Watch, requiring a journey into another dimension to save him. Zombies rise from the cemetery. A blob monster from the woods assumes the form of whoever it devours. A mysterious voice calls the kids, demanding they obey. Ann calls the kids to her castle, announcing her plans to leave. The books were published in the UK by Hodder Children's Books and in the US by Pocket Books.
